One thing still eludes her—love. Happily married, a new baby, and a burgeoning career, Riley Main’s life was on course. One drunk driver turned her world upside down. A widow before the age of thirty, Riley’s life has fallen out of balance. A gentle suggestion from her husband’s grandmother convinces Riley to embark on a journey across the country. With her two-year-old son, Owen, Riley makes her way from sunny San Diego to the chilly little Vermont town of Whiskey Springs. A blown fuel pump in the middle of a snow storm puts Riley on a collision course with a charming pub owner named Fallon Foster. Nothing will be the same again for anyone.Rich with a colorful cast of characters that will make you laugh and cry; Open Tab is a new kind of romantic adventure from best-selling lesbian fiction author JA Armstrong. Welcome to Whiskey Springs.Book Open Tab Review :
4.5 starsFallon Foster loves her small town of Whiskey Springs in Vermont. She runs the best bar in town, she is well loved and her mum is the Mayor. She even has a best friend with benefits, and what’s not to love about a life like that.Riley Main is trying to get her life back into some sort of normalcy, after losing her husband in a car accident. She has the happy toddler Owen to parent, and is looking for a fresh start. Inheriting an old house from her husband, Riley decides to move to Whiskey Springs. It isn’t an auspicious start when Riley’s car breaks down in a snowstorm, but fortunately Fallon comes to her rescue. Realising that the old house has a tree ensconced in the roof after the storm doesn’t help either. The offer by Fallon to provide a home in the interim is a lovely gesture of friendship, but who knows where it will lead. This was a ripper read. I really liked the characters and their complexity. There was a generosity to the characters, and to their complex understanding of love, that I really liked. The setup of a new person in a small town is fairly standard, but what Armstrong does with it was interesting and fresh. The other character who really stood out for me was Andi, the lover and best friend. She is really the hook to why this story works so well, and I’d happily read more about her. I don’t want to go into too much detail because I feel this will spoil it for you. It’s a romance, so we all know who will wind up with whom at the end, but how Armstrong gets the characters there is really well done. There were a couple of paragraphs of text that seemed a bit choppy, but mostly this flows so well, and the characters are so well written that I would happily read this book again. It was a joy to spend time with them and to be in the world created by Armstrong.Apparently there is another book in the series to be released in February 2018 called Cigar Club. If this first book is any indication, I’ll be reading that soon. Though this is a JA Armstrong book,it is not typical.I am surprised and pleased that I seem to have developed a crush on And I, Fallon, and Riley. I know some others were not happy with where this , one ended, but frankly, it's a series so that isn't really a bad thing. Now I am anxiously looking forward to the next book. Isn't that what the writer AND the reader want? A series that engages you and has you wishing for more. Anyway, I love the whole small town feel of this book, the diverse characters, and the realism of the people. As a bisexual it is pleasant to read a character that is comfortable with who she is and people around her that don't think twice about someone capable of loving men and women. I'm not sure the writer was going for that, but it is something I picked out. I think that love comes more than once for each of us, and sometimes those people are in our lives at the same time. I can't wait to see more. Thank you to the author for sharing her stories with the reader's.
